Thanks
to its privileged position, Hotel il Patriarca is the
ideal starting point to many interesting excursions of
the area:
Chiusi
(5km) was an Etruscan town of great importance, as can
be seen from the finds in its intersting museum and the
vast Etruscan necropolis, which surrounds the town.
Montepulciano
(20 km) is a dignified and interesting town on a hilltop
commanding the SE part of Tuscany and Umbria. It is
called Pearl of the Renaissance for its
many Xvi century buildings and for the Tempio di
San Biagio , one of the great churches of the
High Renaissance. It is noted for the red wines, the
most famous being the Vino Nobile.
Pienza
(30 km) is a charming little Renaissance town, the
birthplace of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, aftwards Pius
II. Piazza Pio II, laid out by Bernardo
Rossellini, is a remarkable example of Renaissance town
planning. The Duomo has an interesting
Classical façade in Istrian stone. To the right of the
Duomo is Palazzo Piccolomini, it shows the
influence of Alberti's Palazzo Rucellai in Florence.
